The Sound of Music

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The Bryn Athyn Orchestra presents its winter concert.

The Bryn Athyn Orchestra presents its winter concert on February 23 - and a winter it has been! (A total of four rehearsals have been missed due to weather problems).  We do want to thank the Bryn Athyn Church for letting us hold rehearsals in Heilman Hall while the Academy has been using the Fine Arts Building this winter.  Of course Maestro Dan Kujala will have the players ready for his chosen works:

SNOW REMOVAL ORDINANCE

The Bryn Athyn Police Department has been charged with the responsibility of enforcing the Borough's Ordinance regarding Snow Removal on Pathways. Bryn Athyn Borough Ordinance requires owners or occupants of residences who have pathways or sidewalks in the Borough, abutting upon any public place, to remove snow and ice from pathways within 24 hours after the snow or ice stops accumulating. If ice on a pathway cannot be removed it can be treated with salt, sand, sawdust or cinders to prevent pedestrians from slipping on the pathway.

The life of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) was steeped simultaneously in the rational world of the physical sciences and a deep Christian faith. He lived during the height of the Enlightenment, a period when intellectuals rejected dogmatic religious teachings in favor of science and reason, and his theology reflects a long struggle to understand the world of spirit through investigation of the physical world. Ultimately, that struggle was resolved when (as he described it) his spiritual senses were opened and he began to interact directly with the denizens of heaven, hell, and the world of spirits between. Although his theological writings are based on experiences and visions that may seem unbelievable to a modern audience—as they did to many of Swedenborg’s contemporaries—he writes with full awareness of how difficult his accounts may be to accept. In keeping with his early scholarly training, he presents his ideas in a logical order, drawing examples from everyday life as proof of the truth of his words, inviting readers to judge for themselves.
